Doubtless you're wondering about the name of this journal. It speaks to something everyone who wants to work in a creative field learns, sooner or later. There are plenty of people around, at home and outside, who are perfectly willing to tell you that you don't have a chance: you don't have the talent, the education, the skill, the discipline. The market is overloaded or collapsing or both. You don't have the connections; you don't live in the right place. You don't have the currently marketable style or material; another niche is all the rage and nobody is buying what you do (now or anymore).
I know this just as well as anybody else who is creative. That is why I have always followed the words of the great American philosopher, (www.weirdal.com) Weird Al Yankovic, long before there was ever a Weird Al: "Dare to be stupid." The odds were against my making a living as a writer. Nobody buys books with girl heroes. Nobody buys fantasy with girl heroes. Nobody buys fantasy that isn't all about quests and elves and stately women who stand in the background while the guys do the heavy lifting. And nobody does fantasy that isn't impossibly noble but does include bewildered characters who make crappy jokes when pressed.
And here I am, a bestselling writer, making a living at it, writing girl fantasy heroes who have guys in their lives who appreciate their skills. I still don't write quests, though I do write criminal investigations. Is that sorta the same? As far as I'm concerned, "Dare to be stupid" is a motto to live by.
This is my brand new live journal where my fans (and their parents!) can find me. I promise to keep it clean. The topics will range far and wee, because I believe in a good conversation above everything.
So come one, come all. I ask that you be polite. No insulting other posters, or I will have to be forced to show why the American Badger is my totem animal. If you sense that the person with whom you are debating is not listening to your arguments after you've gone back-and-forth several times, just drop it. There will be others who agree with you in the fullness of time, if my experience is anything to go by. Beyond that, we'll play it by ear, shall we?
Welcome!

Maa, it's really tough writing. I feel like my writing is so INFLUENCED by yours after reading a particularly good book, so often I find myself on the brink of getting sued. O___O *exaggerating*
...
*tries to find something interesting to say* I'm holding back here, otherwise I'd be pelting you with compliments and fangirlish squealing, but that'd be rather annoying and unthoughtful. It'd be wonderful to actually have a decent conversation, but right now I feel like throwing up...man, not my best Friday.
(...Can I just pretend it is?)
Long time fan of your series, please do keep writing and I'll keep reading!
You've inspired me to write in times where I'm not able to. I adore your characters too.
....yeesh, listen to me fangirl. *laughs*
Wonderful! It's always splendid to help someone else write!
>>....yeesh, listen to me fangirl. *laughs*<<
But I like my fangirls. I have cooler fans than anybody!
*adds the White Tiger book to her very very long list*
...I have nothing else to say, except, yay Tammy! I love you!
::blushes::
stalkingquietly admiring your other journal from afar, but didn't want to do the crazy fan gushing thing because it seemed weird to do on a personal journal. But now! *insert crazy fan gushing thing here*Hi. I'm Jodi. :)
>>Oh, yay! I've been stalking quietly admiring your other journal from afar, but didn't want to do the crazy fan gushing thing because it seemed weird to do on a personal journal. But now! *insert crazy fan gushing thing here*<<
Like I told
Besides, you have a ferret icon. You have evilly discovered the way to my heart, as I am very fond of ferrets!
Thanks! It seems fairly comfortable!
Excited to see this created.
I also wanted to thank you, as I was one of those young girls who needed to read about an Alanna (with her Faithful!). I didn't find Daine until later, but still, those two series are books that I find myself re-reading over and over again. Thank you for not listening to those who said no one would read/buy your books.
I look forward to your posts. :)
I'm glad I (and Alanna and Daine) were able to do those things for you, as other authors and characters did those things for me. That's all that matters, in the end, and not those who said it wasn't a good idea!
I've contacted you everywhere, even e-mailed you. Hopefully one will get through.
Bloodhound still listed as being released in 2008. In sheroes you said you changed it to 2009. Please update your website if it is wrong.
Thanks,
Akimastar
P.S. Love your books, I hope I'll be able to write as well sometime in the future.

(By the way, everyone who hasn't, check out "The Wand in the Word". It's full of absolutely delightful interviews with fantasy writers.)
Isn't it? Leonard Marcus does a great job!
Sometimes you need an idea as radical as "dare to be stupid" to make you realize it's time to grab your nose and jump. I've always found that to be the case, anyway. And perfection is overrated. A flaw helps you appreciate how wonderful the rest of the creation is! (That's what I keep telling myself, anyway . . .)
So will you be giving us updates as to how far into books you are and stuff here? not just talking about the ones already/about to come out? (I like both options, a mix of the two would be just brilliant :P) Well I can't wait to read more!
Yipee!

Oh, good--the more, the merrier, especially for the kinds of feminist who know how to laugh and relax sometimes!

Definitely I'll be talking about books in process as well as what's coming up. I started this LJ at a busy time, so intial postings are slow, but a BLOODHOUND update is in the works, trust me!
I always recommend your books to people who think of fantasy as you described it. I know that I appreciate the emphasis on character, study, and training that you write. And I *love* the heroines.
::blushes:: Thank you so much!
Hola!

>>Your characters are amazing, I look forward to each one that comes out.<<
I hope that always remains the case!

>>Thanks Tammy for expanding the space of your fandom! <<
Well, it seemed like time to do something like this!
"I don't believe the imperial glassmaker, Vynain Warder, has ever made anything of the kind." (Berene, Pg 69)
Then on page 78, it was revealed that the current Imperial Glassmaker was Keth's uncle. What was Tris's reaction to Keth's last name? And I'm sure we're all curious- what's happening to the students? We know Evvy's in Emelan with Rosethorn, and Lark is taking care of Glaki and that novice, but what about Keth? And Nia, and Jory? Are you perhaps going to write something on them?
She already knew--in private conversations she had with Keth, she knew his family was one of glassmakers to the Imperial throne.
>> And I'm sure we're all curious- what's happening to the students? We know Evvy's in Emelan with Rosethorn, and Lark is taking care of Glaki and that novice, but what about Keth? And Nia, and Jory? Are you perhaps going to write something on them?<<
Keth is finishing his journeyman's tour, now that he has his glass magic under control. He's studying also with glass mages, but since his kind of glass magic is unique, he has to cobble his magical work together from what he knows of glassmaking and what they can teach him of the spells they use. No one uses lightning in their glass magic. So he's corresponding with Tris and Niko, and working it out with advice from a lot of people.
Nia and Jory are at home, continuing their studies with their teachers. Remember, Daja was really needed to teach them meditation more than magic, though they did work some magic with her. In future years I'll be doing books with Keth, Pasco, and one or both of the twins, just like I did Evvy, with Full Cast Audio, but I have to fit them in between my regular Scholastic and Random House books, so it's going to take me a while.
And that's what I'll be doing more of, especially as the year calms down. I'm right in the middle of my travel season, so I'm kinda slow out the gate on original posts!

So good to see you here in LJ-Land!
Now I just have to figure out how to work this crazy thing.
Where was it I was supposed to go and join and post the address?
Ok so I have to run now but look forward to more posts by you. And of course more books.
Kristi from Topeka
LJ's pretty straightforward--if I can figure it out, anyone can!
Welcome! I had a lot of fun talking to you and your dad--I hope you figured that out. Tim and I are still watching Torchwood, even with all the cuts. I actually liked this last Saturday's episode, with the fairies. Talk about Jack making a very tough call!
this is going to be so cool....
Welcome, long time fan! And about your icon--nice cow!
Welcome--I think we'll have some fun here!
Your userpic has Faithful/Pounce! *sqeauls with delight*
I have nothing against the guys--so long as the girls get equal time. As Faith said to Buffy: "Share, share--that's fair, right?"
No, that's true. And manga has such a huge range of characters, not just superheroes. There's a lot more in the way of school comics; there's historical comics, mythology comics, and a lot more, for a bigger range of tastes than western comics have!
My first love is superhero comics, but I'm glad manga came along for those who want more.
